Good gothic-type mystery set during WWII. It kept me guessing until the very end.

A good read, a so, so mystery, but an absolutely fascinating book from what it tells you about the times and attitudes of the author. Published in 1945, late in Rhinhart's career, it still talks of the wealthy people whose lavish lifestyle was crimped by the advent of the income tax. Only 3-4 servants in a house when many more were needed. The war years setting makes this book a very interesting glimpse of the group. I love when a woman is stressed, she faints. Quirky.

The corpse, somewhat charred around the edges, has been discovered in the linen closet. She was wearing only a silver fox coat and not much else! No one had any idea who she was or what she was doing in the Spencers Maine retreat. Certainly not 24 yr. old Carol Spencer who just arrived to open the house up for the summer.
Unfortunately the police believed Carol to be the prime subject. SHe knew she wasn't guilty which left heer that much closer to tracking down the real killer and that much closer to danger.
