Heather M. (gargirl): changes

I am no longer homeschooling any of my children. The younger 2 started school in the fall in the hopes of them meeting some other kids and making some friends. My eldest son just started a few weeks ago and he loves school now! The special Ed. dept. at his school suits him just fine so far and I am really pleased with his progress. I do miss homeschooling and the house is too quiet sometimes, but I am catching up on all the things that I let slide the past few years and that is a good thing.

Its even quiet enough to read. ^_^

Heather M. (gargirl): Time to Read

I am back to homeschooling just my oldest son. The younger two are attending a really great elementary school and seem to be getting a lot out of it. I think I may have found a good fit for my oldest in K12 online learning. Some work is done here in real life and on paper and some is done on the computer and through their "kmail." He is doing really well so far. ^_^

So, with only one kid at home I actually have some time to read and am currently reading; Kushiel's Dart among others. I still can't seem to settle down and just read a book, I have to have several going that I read in random rotation as the mood seizes me. I guess that means I am scatter-brained.

Heather M. (gargirl): So much to read...

...so little time. So gosh darn cliche'. I must have 15 books started and cannot settle down.

Things are getting a little stressful here as we try to finish our schoolwork and get it all ready to be judged. Its a little scary realising that 9 months of work are soon to be judged and if they are found lacking the kids will have to repeat a grade and likely have to do it in a traditional school setting. My oldest is the really tough one. The distance learning program I have enrolled him in is pretty heavy for him and I am virtually useless in helping him with the math. I think that my middle son is doing very well and has produced a ton of writing and come foreward in math concepts and is reading up a storm. The youngest is still learning the alphabet both recitation and by sight. He likes writing words for himself to go with pictures he draws. I doubt he is where he "should" be, but he is finally making some headway. Balky little beastie. ^_^

Not much else going on at the moment.

Heather M. (gargirl): my bookshelf is a treasure-trove

My to-be-read pile runneth over... Life is good!

I just finished reading the new Anne Bishop novel; Tangled Webs. It was delicious. It was exactly what I needed last weekend. I am reading tons of books now, I mean I have several that I am a few chapters into (or more) despite my relative lack of time for reading. Home-schooling 3 kids is just crazy. What was I thinking? LOL I also babysit a 2 year old 2 days a week and a 5 month old 1 day a week.

Even my addiction to various series of TV shows (heretical, I know) doesn't keep me from chewing on a good book but please don't ask how much sleep I am getting. (hint: not a lot) I am now on 2 book trading sites and the swap a dvd site too. I think I mailed about 20 packages yesterday! Not complaining, I have about 15 points on my other book site now. Of course their method of searching for a book leaves somthing to be desired and I can't figure out how to work some features yet, but I am still enjoying it. Must go, kids to deal with.

Heather M. (gargirl):

I am still entirely enamored with this site. It is wonderful to get books in the mail and wonderful to send books on to a new home.

Not many of my friends seem to find the idea very compelling. Only sweet Kate has signed up. I even have friends who spurned this site in favor of some kind of netflicks but with books site. I think my husband said they are paying $15/month and mail the books back and forth. Definately not my cup of tea. I have been here nearly 5 months and have spent about $30 or so mailing books out I have just stacks to read! ^_^
If I just wanted to borrow books I wouldn't pay a monthly fee, I'd go to the library.

Its funny how we are all different. To me, paperbackswap is clearly the superior option; costs less, more friendly, more of a community activity than a consumer activity, entirely convenient. But to my friends the netbooks place is where its at. They can have 4 books at a time, they are on loan but no due dates, I guess they find the monthly fee reasonable. They described it to my husband as; "like that book thing gargirl does, only better." *laughs* Better for them, maybe, but they didn't try paperbackswap first. ^_^

Heather M. (gargirl): Wheeee!

I just received my first book yesterday and it is in great condition and is all I had been hoping it would be. I got; Beginning Operations; by James White, a sci-fi which I don't read much of, but I am really enjoying. I love the sector general series.

I love PaperBack Swap!
