Randy Alcorn is an excellent author able to develop his characters in the way that you feel you know them on a very personal level. He weaves his story and articulates today's moral issues clearly, concisely and with authority. His development of the supernatural life around us is so unique, so believable, I expect to see his vision come to fruition!

I understand that Steinbeck is touted as one of our 20th century genius writers. However, I find his books to lack a certain integrity. If he is such a great writer, why does he resort to such profane language? Aren't his characters either grotesque enough? Desperate enough? If Steinbeck is so great a writer, might he just draw from his 'literary genius' and choose a vocabulary less base to formulate his characters? I find it lazy of Steinbeck to use profanity. It takes away from my ability to give him any decent rating. It would be a compromise.

I disliked this book for various reasons. It was difficult to get beyond the use of gratuitous profanity and it added to this books non-relative literary value. While I love most depictions of this era I felt that the author was so influenced by making her characters likeable and influential that she missed the mark in developing their characters as a whole. I would not recommend this book to young readers even though it's main character is a 14 year old girl. The author's lame attempt at trying to make it a coming of age story was grossly done and most of those 'scenes' were awkward and out of place. I read it expecting something better to develop, but it never happened.

This book surprised me with its depth and with the full development of the characters. It was compelling in its ability to delve into the emotions of the characters. Equally compelling was how their personalities and character were formed as a result of the circumstances of their lives. Excellent read.
