All together, a very good bio of Robert E. Lee, covering things I did not know or even imagine about him. The only reason for the four-star rating is that I found the narrative a bit smarmy and overdone when discussing some of Lee's reasons for doing some of the things he did, and Flood's actually thinking he could possibly know Lee's reasons. Overall, a good read and worth a spot in my Civil War library.

Wonderful book, so much different than Shakespeare's rendition! A good read, in the tradition of Tranter.

Anything written by Shelby Foote is always top-notch, and this book is no exception. I love the way he uses different perspectives from different soldiers and the way he is able to see both sides of this horrific conflict. This is on my shelf for reading again and again!
