Letter from the Founders

Dear Club Members (aka Extended Book Family),

Each month as we sit down to begin speaking with you, we reflect on the past month. What a month it has been! Our book library continues to expand, and the numbers speak for themselves. Watch carefully as we aim for a quarter of a million books!

With members spreading the good news about the club, new members are joining in the fun daily. While our ‘double rewards’ for referrals comes to a close, we still continue to offer a credit for each and every referral that becomes an active member. So, keep those referrals coming! Also, look for new contests and fun games.

As the club grows, so does our volume of feedback and work on the site. Please keep this in mind as we try to personally respond to the needs of each and every one of our members. Your patience and understanding is appreciated.

Sincerely,

Richard & Robert

Testimonial from a fellow club member . . .

I do love paperbackswap. I tell everyone about it and I don't even care if I get a book credit! It is a great way to find good books because of the many browsing features. Much better then reading the backs of books at a bookstore. You can find out what everyone else is reading. I just got a whole slew of practically new Dr. Suess books...I could never have afforded to buy them at the store. Supposedly I've saved 140.00 dollars on books this year, but I know its been much more than that. Now I have something new to read to my daughter. If you've ever read the same book to a kid 20 times you know the value of that! My hats off (if I wore one) to the founders of paperbackswap!

FAQs as Easy as 1, 2, 3 and A, B, C
Finding answers to frequently asked questions will soon be easier than ever. Our FAQ section is in the process of being redesigned. We’re grouping questions by categories and cross-referencing topics in a format that will be as simple as clicking a button. No more wading through paragraphs and paragraphs of text, instead you’ll soon be able to browse by subject. Look for these fine-tuned changes to arrive in your PBS account soon.

Let the Games Begin!
Part of the fun at PaperBackSwap is trading books, chatting and making new friends, posting on forums and watching your Book Map fill up with lots of red dots. Another part is finding all the entertaining games and contests that are offered daily. Now there is a section dedicated to GAMES. Richard started with his Twenty Question game, and members stepped in and took on the roll of game moderators. So far, we’ve had more than 100 games take place on the site. In addition to games, look for two new contests to be offered in November.

The first game, “Count Your Blessings . . . and Books” will give members a chance to guess the last two digits of the total number of books posted on the site as of Thanksgiving Day 8 pm ET. This contest will be limited to the first 400 members. Contest rules and instructions will be distributed the first week of November.

The second contest, “A Quarter of a Million” offers all members a chance to participate in the fun. In this contest, members will be given chances to guess the exact date and time that a member will post the 250,000th book. Time slots are on a first-come, first-reserve basis. So, get your mathematical thinking caps on and start calculating so that you’re ready to reserve your guesses. May the best “guesser” win!

Postal Forums Provide Expert Information
Many times we go to the forums to get opinions and ideas. However, when it comes to the Postal Forums, you can count on the real deal. Postal worker and dedicated PBS member Steve L. has been working with the founders to provide accurate and up-to-date information to all club members. Steve reads these forums daily and addresses postal concerns and questions. Please take the time to read and review all the postal forums, as this information is invaluable to those members wanting to send and receive books in a timely and efficient manner. Thanks Steve for all you do to keep us in line with the USPS.

A few gentle reminders regarding mailing:
- Please don’t use tape over stamps. USPS must be able to ‘cancel’ stamps.
- Please don’t use tape on covers when mailing books. Use of tape causes covers to tear and receiving members to be disappointed.
- Saran Wrap makes an excellent ‘weather proof’ cover under the book wrappers. However, the Cling Plus or Press-n-Seal products leave a gluey residue on the covers, so please don’t use them.
- Media Mail packages over one pound should be taken to the post office instead of dropping them in a box. This is due to post 9/11 security restrictions at the USPS.

Customized Email Options
Ever open your email and find out that PBS has been working all night long just for you? There are emails to notify you of a book you requested, email to let you know a book has been mailed, email to say you’ve earned a credit, email that says you have personal messages . . . and the list goes on and on.

Well, now the list of emails coming from PBS can be customized to meet a member’s individual needs. Maybe you don’t really need to know that we’ve sent your request on to another member or that you have a personal message that the book you ordered has just been mailed. Now you can go to ‘My Account’ => ‘Account Settings’ => ‘Email Settings’ and choose to ‘opt out’ of specific emails that are listed.

Of course, some emails are totally necessary and serve as reminders from The PBS Team. Others are FYI and totally optional. You choose. Just another way PaperBackSwap is continuing to improve the club for all members.

New Discussion Forum Policy
A topic we’d rather never have to discuss – member behavior in the Discussion Forums. Let us just be short and to the point … we have a policy in place. If you break the rules, you will lose your membership. No discussion necessary. Please review the policy, often.

Just Like Santa, We’re Recording Who’s Been Naughty and Who’s Been Nice . . .so Please Don’t Send Damaged Books
With our new reporting system in place for members, all damaged book information will be recorded and reviewed. This includes how many times a member reports a book as damaged as well as how many times a member gets reported as sending a damaged book. If these numbers become inappropriate for any member at any given time, based on the terms of use, we will take action to close that member’s account. So, please only report books that are totally unacceptable.

Ever Wonder “Why Wasn’t My Request Accepted?”
Well, wonder no more. Now members whose requests are not accepted are able to see why. Any time a request is turned down by a member, they must provide the reason why they are not able to keep their commitment to swapping the books they have posted to the site.

If your request was turned down due to Requestor Conditions and there is no other copy of the book available, you will be notified. Please keep in mind that if you maintain your conditions, there will be an active copy of the book in the system, so you will not be able to Wish List the book.

As a reminder, you should only post books that you are willing to trade. Also, you should only Wish List books that you are willing to request when they become available. Lastly, your Requestor Conditions should be within reason. Given these standards, we should rarely see book requests being turned down. A count of the number of requests turned down is kept for each member.

Members Respond Strongly for Hurricane Katrina Book Relief
As our Hurricane Katrina Book Relief comes to a close, we’d like to thank each and every one of our members that donated books from their personal libraries. Please know that you have made a difference in the lives of so many. Because the area is still in a rebuilding phase, we’ve been asked to wait to coordinate delivery for a few more weeks. Once the books arrive at their final destination, we will give you a complete update.

In Closing …
As the leaves are turning vibrant colors, a chill fills the air and we light our first fire of the season, we look forward to spending the month of November with a book in hand and our Book Family in our thoughts. Let this be a peaceful month, filled with thanksgiving for our many blessings and prayers for those less fortunate.

Faithfully yours,

Richard & Robert
And The PaperBackSwap Team
