Somewhat depressing account of what some people do to survive. Of course, the main character and her best friend had both proven they were self-centered before World War II began, so why not continue to scrape bottom to continue their immorality.
Actually the most interesting part of the book begins late, as it is the story of a vast French collaboration with the Nazis and black marketeers. However, by this time I, as Groucho Marx once insulted someone, wanted to "buy back my introduction" to the main character. As a result, I skimmed the final 150 pages just to get the book over with.
Unfortunately, my copy is an uncorrected proof, so I can't post it here.
