Max is good writer; having taken Shamus and Edgar awards for his works. His original graphic novel was made into the Tom Hanks vehicle, Road to Perdition. Recently, he's turned to novelizations. His version of Clint Eastwood's In the Line of Fire was better than the movie.
This, his early entry into his CSI original novels, is a solid police procedural/physical evidence stlye mystery. The charachters, whom I've never seen on TV, seem well written with bits of their life entering the story in an appropriate manner. With the cast of 4 CSI's, one supervisor, and two dectective/police, this is no easy task. I enjoyed this book, and look forward to reading some more new Max, now that I've found him again.
I also recommend his Eliot Ness series of historical novels is also very good. Some of his stories take place near his home along the Illinois/Iowa border of "Quad Cities": Moline, Rock Island, etc; a metropolis that rivals large cities in size. Enjoy
