After the coach in which she was riding to London broke down, Fate let Lady Jane Brooke to seek shelter at the nearest house.

She was reluctantly admitted by the Earl of Wintringham, most often called Lord Winter for reasons instantly obvious to Jane. Mindful of her scandalous escapade thus far, she introduced her self as Miss Brooke, governess.

Despite himself, Lord Winter began to thaw in the simple presence of Miss Brooke. But Lady Jane knew that if her deception were ever discovered, "My Lord Winter" would render her frozen with disapproval.
