Set during the Napoleonic wars, Gabrielle Robichon has taken over the operation of the family's Cirque Equestre upon her father's death. She accepts a mission to carry Rothschild's gold to the English army along their normal southern route, but is astonished that they will be accompanied by an English soldier, whose job it is to ensure the safety of the gold. She knows his presence will draw unwanted attention and suspicion, but does not know the extent of the danger she and her brothers will face.
