The Basque and Catalan cultures threaten the unity of Spain. As this book shows, Francisco Franco tried to quell the minorities with his dire repressions. However, these cultures have unique histories and languages that are older than modern Spain's. After Franco died in 1975, these two cultures resurfaced and grew stronger.

Because the Basque language is an 'isolate' (meaning no other language around it is related in any way), we now know that the Basque people have been an independent group for more than a thousand years.

This is the interesting story of the struggle of two distinct peoples, as part of the nation of Spain, who want to maintain their distinctive cultures and languages.
