The storyline itself isn't terrible, if not terribly original - an alternate reality created by alteration of the past via time travel. But the writing is less than wonderful. Either the author was sloppy (the word "illegible" used instead of "inaudible" as an example) or her editor was a moron and neither owned a dictionary. It seems like every other page has a glaring error, usually word usage, that goes beyond personal style and into the realm of ignorance of the proper use of language. Those who are fond of "slash" fan-fiction may enjoy this, but at times it seemed like this novel was merely a vehicle for the author to find as many ways as possible to describe in stilted prose the emotional intimacy between Kirk and Spock. Simply terrible overall and it's not as though I expect great literature from Star Trek novels.
I do expect a believable plot and evidence that someone involved in the production of the novel be they author or editor has some attention to detail and grasp of the English language. And I'm not a fan of "slash" fan-fic, especially when it seems as badly done as this was, so my take may not apply to people with different tastes.
