Intense. Gripping. Necessary. Heart wrenching.

Not sticking to my typical genre, I was compelled to read this novel. Having no military background anywhere in my family, I have always been amazed at the personal strength any member of the "branches" has. That said, just reading what SEALs or other elite forces have to go through just to become a member of the elite is awe-inspiring, unfathomable.

Initially, I couldn't figure out where Mr. Luttrell was going but by the time you are midway through the book, you understand the importance of his background information. He also introduces you to the culture and you see the necessity of it in later accounts. He allows you to feel as if you are right there with him. I laughed at the humor, I cried at the pain, I could literally feel his emotions pouring out of the book.

This book is a necessary read for anyone who really wants to know the truth and honor behind the people who protect our freedom and who are the back bone of the country we live in. This book is not glossed over or sensationalized by the media to garner ratings. This book is a test of personal mettle, of friendship and love for something greater than us. (Finding out that Mr. Luttrell attributes his strength and life to God was just a bonus to this heart-wrenching story of courage and valor.) (Ours isn't to question why, sometimes it is acceptance and find out what we are supposed to do with what we are given.)

This book gave me further understanding to the sacrifice the "servants" of our country make. We are a country that is quick to condemn others, not wanting to look within. Reading this life account made me even more thankful for the sacrifice the FAMILIES of service men and women make. It is shameful that they are not valued as they should be and that they have to fear the backlash of their actions when they are in personal danger everyday for us.
