Anyone who reads mysteries probably already knows this is the beginning of the Kinsey Milhone alphabet series. I've had Y IS FOR YESTERDAY on my shelf for a long time as I wanted to read this series in order, but I kept putting it off because there's so many. Which just makes it worse of course. I don't think I've read her since "X" came out five years ago. I read this book first over 30 years ago, and I think it holds up pretty well. It's obviously set in the 80s, there's no modern technology. I did not remember the plot at all, but I picked up a villain immediately - not sure if that's memory or just a lot of time reading mysteries. It's got a definite hard-boiled tone to it; I found myself "hearing" her as though from the old TV show Dragnet, that kind of short choppy voice. There's a lot of minutiae like what she eats, where she goes running and so forth. There's a few nitpicks I had, but not much. I still liked it all these years later, and I hope that continues over the next six months or longer, as I get to all of them.
