Spenser and Emma agreed to a marriage of convenience to keep Spenser's older uncle from marrying young Emma. Spenser sends Emma to Kellworth- his country estate and he goes off to war. Three years later strange circumstances bring Spenser back to Kellworth and to a very angry and distrusting Emma. Ongoing trust issues strain the relationship as Spenser tries to determine why the estate has been allowed to crumble, staff has been let go and there is no money to pay for even necessary food. Emma believes Spenser has betrayed her and does not want to be taken in again but what she believes are lies and deceptions. Each must learn to overcome fears and to lean on each other in times of trouble. This story has romance, suspense and kept me guessing until the end as to what would be revealed regarding the outcome of this relationship.
