Fourteen-year Simon Horowitz loves music; lives in Berlin. His wealthy family owns many collector's instruments, mainly violin. One is especially valuable to their family, a 1742 Guarneri Del Gesu violin. When the Nazis arrive in Berlin, many of the family's valuable possessions are confiscated. Simon, his father and brother are sent to Dachau.
Many years later in present day, Rafael Gomez, an orchestra conductor is inspired by the playing of a violin virtuoso, also a fourteen-year old, Daniel Horowitz. Gomez learns of this fourteen-year-old through acquaintance with the talented musician. During this time, Gomez learns of his grandfather's and the rest of his family of wartime horrors.
A wonderful read of a young violin virtuoso and how the gift of music reaches and travels through many generations, despite the struggles of past history.
