I read Oscar Lewis' book as a teenager in the mid-1960s and it gave me a clear snapshot of Mexican life since the Revolution of 1910. Rereading the Introduction and the Appendix of this volume reminds me of what real poverty is.
For the last couple of years, there have been ice cream trucks plying the tent-strewn streets of downtown LA, indicating that we are not as poor as these folk struggling in Avila Camacho's day.
