The author is a Pulitzer prize winning historian, but this boodk is actually a collection of reviews he wrote on other people's books. He is certainly hard on most of the other historians, but he has credentials which allow him to pass such judgements. I thought the title was misleading - I expected a treatise on why history is important rather than a discussion on what he finds wrong with other authors approaches to history in general.
