Those who read that book will recognize the protagonist of this one as the brilliant, elegant, and elusive lawyer who mastermined the defense of Rusty Sabich. The novel probes the character and private life of this complex man as he attempts to understand his wife's suicide while representing his rich but shady brother-in-law.
