Really nice little mystery, very similar in tone to Steven Havill's Posadas County mysteries. Samuel Craddock is a retired sheriff in the small town of Jarrett Creek, TX. His old friend Dora Ann has been calling, telling him she's worried about someone watching her, but Samuel thinks she doesn't have anything to worry about. But then she's murdered, and Samuel knows the incompetent sheriff won't put in the effort to find the real killer. Craddock is a wonderful character, a decent man but not infallible. I liked all the characters, although the sheriff seemed just a tad over the top. Loved the setting, loved the small town murder - no terrorists, no serial killers - liked the first person POV (it's written in present tense, not my favorite, but not a problem for me). Good book, first in a series, I already added the next ones to my list.
