If you have never read Anita Shreve you should.

12 yr old Nicky Dillon and father come upon something shocking in the woods near their home, an abandoned baby wails, and in the days and weeks that follow she glimpes corners of the adult world she never dreamed existed. For the first time Nicky questions her strange life's shape. Why her father moved to the isolated New England farmhouse, the fate of the baby girl, and the arrival of a young woman haunted by her own terrible mistakes. Together, Nicky, her father, and this woman must work their way through a thicket of their decisions, each one seeming to carry equal possibilities of heartbreak or redemption.
