Ken Follett's first attempt out of the Spy-Thriller Genre and into Historical Fiction. This book is set in the 12th century. Tom Builder desires more than anything in the world to build a great cathedral. He succeeds in finding a cathedral that needs his help and he quickly becomes the main carpenter on the team. He must deal with small town ignorance, the church, and the constant battle between the fighting monarchs of the time, Mathilda and King Steven. This is my favorite Ken Follett book of all time and one of my favorite books period. I read it twice. Once when it first was published in 1989 and once again, 18 years later when it's sequel World Without End came out. I believe these 2 books are part of a Trilogy with the next book, Fall of Giants already in print. I just haven't had time to read it yet. I'm sure it will be just as good as it's predessors.
