The majestic silence of ghost gums
stand sentry
to the voice of the earth
smudged along the curbside –
we flow south, south-east
disembark
Shoes,
native poppies in native hand

I remember the heat
the sun on my back
the flush just after the sting
rush of blood like vigorous rain on an old oak
trembling for the goddess -
That diamond river swallowed me whole,
compelled me to kneel
hurl my life into its throat.
The song of light in its sparkling monastery
watery gaze of its guppy republic under the rim,
witnesses to my muscles
rigged heartbeat
haunted head-

When he bent low to touch me,
my god I sighed so loud tossed my eyes skyward ankles scuffed on stone,
hard jewels
and hunger
The awesome island of my desire
struck me like a pulse
like a predator
a pilgrim startled by the body's bounty
its sorrow like a bayou.
These muscles burn like beggars after heat, water, dirt
relief
sex like illumination.

I saw the split,
Savored the unbearable longing
to leave him,
lurch through space
Cut my skin on his bones, his cheeks
chafe my face across his sentient eyes
legs like roots -
his lust for me
viscous in my hibernating veins.
I lied to him
spoke a long time to no one,
saw nothing
attempted my life on the page -
some conscrescence
My tongue no longer burning,
My body not yet ash
