When I was old enough to walk
Around town by myself
But not old enough to remember
How old I was
I walked up Central Avenue
To where it became Beach 20th St.
And walked into
My favorite candy store.....
And lifted some candy
It was probably chocolate
As I have always been hooked
On that delectable substance
It was a thrillicious experience

No one said boo to me
No one suggested that
I was headed for a life of crime, or
Wondered about my upbringing
And most important,
No one called the cops

Years later I pondered
The meaning of all this
I thought about how
An accident of birth
To this family
Rather than that family
Shielded me from
Those heavy consequences
