This was just top notch. Steel does it again!!
Camille is the daughter of parents who own a great winery in the Napa Valley who have had a great marriage and life. Then something happens to her mom and later this calculating evil woman named Maxine comes into her father's life and all hell breaks loose. She also has two sons that are awful but I can't tell you more or it will ruin the story for you.

This really is kinda like a fairytale story the way Steel set out the story. But I have to say it's a very good one. I couldn't put it down, I was hooked from the beginning until the end. I really came to Feel for Camille. I could feel her hurting and her pain. But I also felt her joy and happiness. When you can feel those things for a character in a story you know its goo

I liked this story a lot because of the way it was told and because of the main characters. This is about a pair of brothers. One is a religious man who runs a group. In this story, he is a corpse and his brother takes on his persona in some crazy attempt to bring his brother back to life by sacrificing others. He did not go out and murder people, however. He used his knowledge of herbs and wildflowers and plants to convince people who were living in pain and misery that he would put them out of their misery painlessly. Then, he mutilates them so it looks like they've been murdered. He has a very good racket going until Inspector Micallef clues in on him and begins to hunt him down. It leads to some bad things happening to her, but in the end, she comes out on top and finds a weak link in her department. I'll recommend this to my book club. My one negative is he poses as a religious Christian. Guess it's because you can make Christians be the bad guy and not be hunted down by a crazy person with a sword.

This is a good mystery with twists and it moved along at a decent pace. The main characters are interesting and have a supportive relationship that I like.

I wasn't sure if I would finish this book while reading part 1, because I was totally confused about what was going on. I stuck with it out of loyalty to the author, whose books I have always enjoyed, and am glad I did. This one was a slow burn, but has an action-packed ending. Creating sympathetic characters that the reader becomes invested in is what sets Michael Koryta's books apart to me, and in the end this was not a disappointment after all.

Moon Signs

Andrea & her sister visit a ski lodge to visit their niece in hopes of discovering information about items their grandparents obtained long ago. Shortly after arriving at the lodge the female co-owner is found dead behind the reception desk. Light cozy, enjoyable read. Sometimes it felt that it took a bit too long to reach a point.

Interesting story of a girl's coming of age as her family tries to homestead in the remote area of Alaska. The details of their life fighting to survive were interesting. The drama of a family caught in domestic violence was tragic.

Great book! Great author!

The Covenant of Water

Great rich tapestry of a number of lives, well-written, but it was a miss for me. Too many characters, didn't have to be that long, and while the author several times in the book tried to explain the concept of it overall through a 'covenant of water', I felt that was a bad title..and not necessary tie-in. A friend of mine read it just before me and said the same thing. We both wanted to love it more.

The Man Who Killed Fortescue

An excellent mystery featuring a famous police detective of his day who is frustrated he was not able to solve an important murder a year ago. Then there is another murder which appears to be related to the first. But there are way too many suspects. I found it amusing this famous detective was assisted by a 12-year-old boy who followed clues the detective overlooked.

One interesting part of the novel was the Japanese-American "house boy" for the second murder victim. When mentioned in the novel he was always referred to as "the Jap" which I found jarring. But then this novel was written in 1928. Not that bigotry doesn't exist any more. We see that in the news every day.
