Coyote Waits (Joe Leaphorn / Jim Chee Bk 4)

Another early entry in the Leaphorn & Chee series as the two separately investigate the murder of a Navajo policeman and how -- or if -- it's connected to Navajo creation stories.

Hollywood Hoofbeats: A Celebration of Horses in Classic Movies and TV

Outstanding study of the many ways in which horses have been used over the hundred-plus year history of the motion picture industry. Copiously illustrated, with lots of "inside" stories.

Summers at the Saint: A Novel

Not a bad 'beach read' as they say. MKA has a certain formula, widowed/divorced/single woman, handsome single mysterious guy. A quick read, as they all are. Fun.

Cold Case Identity (Hudson Sibling Solutions, Bk 2) (Harlequin Intrigue, No 2193)

Good book. Palmer was surprised when Louisa came to him with an investigation request. She is his little sister's best friend and a woman he has tried to avoid for a long time. He doesn't know when she went from being that pesky friend of Anna's to a beautiful woman but it is playing havoc with his life.

Louisa receives some disturbing information, and Palmer is the only person she trusts to keep her secret while they investigate. The hard part is keeping a lid on her crush on him since she was a kid.

The suspense of the story kept me turning the pages. Who is the person claiming Louisa is her kidnapped sister? What do her parents know about this? I could feel Louisa's confusion and worry over the truth. When she and Palmer look into her past, it becomes evident that someone doesn't want her to discover the truth. Escalating attacks put Louisa's life in jeopardy. I did not expect the perpetrator to be who it was. The final confrontation was a nail-biter.

I enjoyed the development of the relationship between Louisa and Palmer. He has quite the reputation, and it was fun to see people warning them away from each other. Both tried to fight their feelings but love won out.

Nightwatching: A Novel

I heard about this book on the Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon. It was his 2024 book club pick and sounded very gripping so I decided to check it out from the library. I was not disappointed! It turned out to be a lot better than I was expecting. It tells the story of a woman who is home alone with her two young children when she hears the noise of footsteps and sees the figure of a man in the nearby hallway. The man is a home invader and appears to be after the young daughter. So can the mother escape and protect her children?

The story seemed pretty straight forward but as it progresses it tells of the hardships the mother had endured going back to her childhood and marriage. She was plagued by the skin disorder, vitiligo, which causes the loss of skin color in blotches. She lost her mother in a car accident, she is at odds with her father-in-law, her husband is not there to protect her, and she is sometimes not believable.

I don't want to give too many other details but overall the novel was a very frightening psychological thriller full of tension and suspense and was very unputdownable. I read it in two sittings over two days and would highly recommend it.

i am 69 years old and this book is about 30 somethings. a tiny bit of it was unrelatable for me but mostly it's about a lovely human named daphne who is trying to land, to find her place in the world. she goes from being buttoned up, literally and figuratively, to opening up, blossoming and healing. she meets lovely people along the way who befriend her and encourage her to be herself. there is nothing new, theme wise, in the story, but it's incredibly entertaining. oh and did i mention hot? daphne's love interest, miles, is definitely a guy we'd all like to have met. or meet. oh, and daphne is a librarian. if you've read any of my other reviews, i gravitate towards libraries and librarians. this book delivers. including a huge read-a-thon. and there are some moments outdoors, with beaches and dunes and lakes and kayaks and lavender farms that are delicious. i listened to the audio book and the narrator, julia whelan, was excellent. i am going to explore more of her projects.

Beneath a Starless Sky

This book is about the horrific treatment of the Jews but has more to do with people helping them. The main character is a Hollywood personality that stars with Fred Astaire. After an injury she finds ways to try and help her family. The ending was a surprise that wrapped up the story nicely.

The Bassoon King: My Life in Art, Faith, and Idiocy

For a funny guy, this book lacks entertainment. If you care what Rainn âthinksâ about multiple subjects-most of all-spirituality Not much info on the office years, which is what we want! Pass on this one. Very disappointing

Utah Beach: The Amphibious Landing and Airborne Operations on D-Day, June 6, 1944
hardtack avatar reviewed on + 2572 more book reviews

Excellent history of the preparation for and the first day of combat at Utah Beach on D-Day.

The author points out that Utah Beach has long been considered a "piece of cake" compared to Omaha Beach. However, when adding in the casualties suffered by the 82nd and 101st Airborne Divisions which dropped in support of Utah Beach, and further adding in the specialized units---including the Troop Carrier command--- supporting the 4th and 90th Infantry Divisions, the casualty rate at Utah was about 75% of the casualties on Omaha.

Life and Otter Miracles
esjro avatar reviewed on + 911 more book reviews

Sweet story about a depressed and isolated 19 year old with medical issues who is reintroducted to living with the help of some lcoal otters. There is a mystery as well, but it seems secondary to the story of Phoebe and her father.

This book takes place in the same village as Ellie and the Harp Maker, and the characters from the previous book make appearances. It is not critical to have read Ellie.... though.

The otter illustrations at the start of each chapter are adorable.

Alpha Animals: Incredible Pictures and Fun Facts about the Biggest, Fastest, Strongest Creatures on Earth

Although I would have appreciated larger photos, the information was fascinating. Children and adults will enjoy learning about the animal kingdom's strongest, tallest, etc. The second photo helped get a perspective on some of these animals.

Confusion (Cazalet Chronicles, Bk 3)

Good story of the war, and two women with problems.

Seven Girls Gone (Quinn & Costa, Bk 4)

Great page-turner! I am going back to read the other books in the series and look forward to the new releases. I appreciated the procedural elements, the way Kara conects with suspects while undercover, and how the team she's on is becoming a found family for her. The title lets you know that there are a lot of murders in the book, but it wasn't over the top gory - I could read before bed without bad dreams.

I honestly thought that my book was missing the last chapter. I was very disappointed in a story that started out good, but left me hanging, and not in a good way.

Paws to Remember (Magical Cats, Bk 15)

Another cozy mystery in this Magical Cats series. When a power outage and pipe break occurs at the Arts Co-Op building, a body is found encased in the wall during repairs. Kathleen helps to uncover the facts surrounding a teenager's death that occurred thirty-six years ago. All with the help of Hercules and Owen - two cats with amazing powers.

This was a great read. It was allot about Elizabeth Taylor, of course, and his other 3 wives too, but mostly about Richard and his life, before becoming a star, and to his death.

This is a library book with the pocket & card still attached to the inside cover. It also has stickers on the back of the cover and "Norwich High School" stamped along the pages.

Starship: Rebel (Starship, Bk 4)
