Dear Members,

We want to get 2014 off on the right foot, by sharing some very important advice with you - read the PaperBackSwap Blog!  It has awesome stuff that you will not find anywhere else. For example: VickyJo's current series on Read the Book Before You See the Movie - so many books are coming out as movies in 2014 that you better start now if you want to read the books before they hit the big screen.  The Blog runs thoughtful and insightful member book reviews, hosts book giveaways, author interviews and more. Seriously, if you are not reading the Blog, you are missing out.  Bookmark it in your browser and check it out - you will be glad you did.

In other January news - the weather continues to be crazy in much of the country, with extreme day to day temperature fluctuations, the Polar Vortex, and now the menacing-sounding Bombogenesis.  Clearly Mother Nature has some issues to work out. We recommend tucking up inside as much as possible, with a stash of good books.  If your To Be Read pile has eroded - or the books in the pile are just not appealing to you right now - remember that there are millions of books available for swapping in the club (and more being added all the time), and a huge variety of new books for purchase at low prices in our Market. Don't forget the Spotlight email, our focus on savings that showcases some of the Market's best bargains. Since you can swap the new books after reading them, it's a total win-win.

If you are in Hawaii, please stop gloating! :) And we hope that everyone will please take a moment to send up a kind thought for the dedicated souls who bring your mail to you - they really don't get as much appreciation (or hot chocolate) as they deserve.

We hope you are all staying safe and warm,

Richard and
The PaperBackSwap Team

MEMBER OF THE MONTH

Linda W.  (reacherfan1909)

Linda has been a member for almost five years and has over a thousand official swaps; she's very active in Games and has contributed to the PBS Blog.  In Games she apparently answers to: Groundhog, Le Grande Groundhougoue, RF, ROUS (rodent of unusual size), hoggie, "that damn rodent", marmot, and more... She is a swapper of many names!  The nominations from Gamers were effusive:

"Linda adds color and excitement to every game that she participates, which is a lot of them. She entertains with humorous imagination. Well loved and respected among us all in games forum, she puts the best books in games, ones that cater to people's reading interests and is a most generous sharer of books!"

"Her additions in the swaps are so creative and entertaining - she gives us all a laugh and we look forward to everything she posts!"

Linda, you've "hogged up" a lot of love from Gamers. You are Member of the Month for January.  Congratulations!

If you have any nominations for Member of the Month, submit them to us hereYour nomination will not "expire"--anyone you nominate will have a chance at getting Member of the Month if enough nominations accumulate over time. Each month the person who has the most votes accumulated when the Newsletter goes to press gets to be Member of the Month and gets a newsletter mention and a nifty MoM icon to wear on profile and forum posts with pride.  So go for it! Tell us who's helped you in the Forums, who's been a great swapper, who in your opinion is a credit to PBS.  We are keeping a list of all the nominated members.  Who knows--one of them might be YOU!

DEAR LIBRARIAN

Dear Librarian - I just went to buy some PBS Money to send a book with Printable Postage, and I was surprised to see a 50 cent Kiosk Transaction Fee listed in the cart before I checked out. You're already charging a fee for printing postage; why 50 more cents on top of that?  I like using PBS Printable Postage to mail from home!  Has this fee always been there? -- Confused in Colesville

Dear Coco,

The fee was just re-introduced a week ago.  We had eliminated it for a couple of years, but we had to bring it back, unfortunately. We are charged pretty significant fees by PayPal - PayPal handles all of our Kiosk transactions (credit/debit card payments as well as PayPal accounts).  Providing the Kiosk has been costing us so much in fees that something needed to be done.

The good news is that the fee is a FLAT fee - so it doesn't matter how much is in your Cart at checkout, the fee will always be 50 cents. For members who use Printable Postage or PBS Delivery Confirmation, that means it makes much more sense to buy PBS Money less often, in larger amounts.  Loading your PBS Money account with 10 or 20 dollars at a time will allow you to print more than one wrapper before having to "reload", reducing the cost in fees per wrapper.  Of course, the fee is not applied when you use PBS Money as your payment method for checkout - only when you use Credit/Debit or PayPal.

There is no membership fee (members don't pay for club membership) and no monthly printable postage subscription fee like other printable postage providers charge, so the Kiosk transaction "flat fee" (the same 50 cents no matter how much or how little is purchased) is the only way for us to continue providing the Kiosk. We are sorry about that!

Dear Librarian -  I love the Spotlight!  Can you do a version for audio books only?  -- Inquiring in Indiana

Dear Indy,

We're glad you are enjoying the Spotlight, our weekly email showcasing amazing bargains in our Market. Spotlight books are on Wish Lists in the club, are less expensive than Amazon, and ship within 3-5 business days. We have had many requests for more Spotlights, particularly ones that are genre-focused.  We do hope to make that available soon!  Stay tuned.

 The Last Word:

  • As always, don't forget to start your Amazon shopping from the link at the top of the PBS site - when you do this, a small percentage of your purchase amount comes to us.  So whenever (and whatever) you plan to purchase on Amazon, start from the Amazon link at the top of the PBS site. It's an easy, free way to support the club!
