Dear Members,

Happy New Year!

We hope that your holidays were relaxing and filled with fun, and that 2018 finds you recharged. We don't personally believe in New Year's Resolutions (too much pressure!) but we do like the idea of a fresh start for a fresh year.

For PaperBackSwap members, that might mean checking over your Bookshelf and removing any books you no longer have, and checking over your Wish List and removing any items you no longer wish to receive (we're guessing that some of you got books for Christmas!). Keeping lists tidy keeps things moving fast in the club, getting your Wish List books to you sooner, and the Wish List books you post will get requests sooner too. Also, don't forget to post the books you've read and are ready to part with: get a head start on your spring cleaning!

Also, if you're enrolled in Annual Membership, you might want to check your expiration date (put your cursor over the clock at the top of any page on the site to see it) to see if it's time to re-subscribe, and if you're not yet enrolled, you can review the membership options to see what membership level will work best for you!

The New Year can also mean trying something new. Consider this: the Wish List book you've been waiting for might be available NEW for 1 Book Credit + shipping! That's what Member Appreciation Books are: new (overstock) books that you can get for 1 Book Credit + shipping&handling (S&H is $3.99 for the first book in a shipment, and $1.09 for each additional book). Member Appreciation Books can help you take a bite out of your Wish List -- and some of them may be books you didn't even know you wanted to read!

Not all accounts will be eligible for MABs all the time (eligibility is random and can change at any time), and MAB offers can be fleeting -- a book can be available in limited quantity and snapped up quickly. It may be a MAB one day, and not available as a MAB the next. So if you do see a MAB you want, you might want to jump on it!

If you want to make it possible for your account to get MAB offers, first you need to choose your favorite genres in your account settings. (That tells our system what kinds of books to offer you.) Once you have chosen your favorite genres on your homepage, you just need to wait. If you're not offered a MAB right away, check back later and things may have changed!

Read more about MABs, including how to tell if your account has a MAB offer, in the Help Center.

And of course, if you don't want to get new overstock books using your credits, Book Credits can be used the way you've always used them -- to get used books from other members! There are almost 2 million books available to request right now. Check the sliding displays on your homepage or the Books Posted Today page (you can sort that page by genre) to find currently-available books you'd like to read.

You can see examples of what kinds of MABs are being offered today in this Newsletter, below the Showcase book.

Happy reading!

The PaperBackSwap Team

The Rooster Bar by John Grisham   Mark, Todd, and Zola came to law school to change the world, to make it a better place. But now, as third-year students, these close friends realize they have been duped. They all borrowed heavily to attend a third-tier, for-profit law school so mediocre that its graduates rarely pass the bar exam, let alone get good jobs. But maybe there's a way out. Maybe there’s a way to escape their crushing debt, expose the bank's student-loan scam, and make a few bucks in the process..read more

MEMBER OF THE MONTH

Kathy F (txmom24)

Kathy is beginning her 9th year with PaperBackSwap, and she established her dedication to swapping early with the popular Wish List Virtual Box game in the Games Forum.  She's swapped a ton of books with other members, and has an unblemished record (all of the books she's mailed have been received in good condition) -- something that's really tough to achieve with high-volume swapping!

But the most prominent characteristic that made other members consider her special is something to which everyone can aspire.

The nominations we received for Kathy put it well:

"She's been running the Wishlish Virtual Box for years and she's done a fantastic job! Not only is she very attentive toward the box, but her best attribute is her friendliness."

"I know any time I need to reach out to Kathy, she will be considerate, polite, and just plain nice in her response."

Kathy, you are proof that sometimes nice guys finish first! You are our Member of the Month for January. Congratulations!

Do you know of another PaperBackSwap member who just seems to go above and beyond? One who makes you smile, or helps you figure out something about a swap, or who simply makes you glad she or he is part of the club? You may just have found yourself a MoM (Member of the Month)!

MoMs are special members, ones who put a little extra effort in for the benefit of others, even when they think no one may ever notice. If you believe that you have encountered a MoM, submit your nomination to us here. Tell us why you think the member is a MoM -- the more details, the better! The Member of the Month gets a newsletter mention and a nifty MoM icon to wear on profile and forum posts with pride.  So go for it! Tell us who's helped you in the Forums, who's been a great swapper, who in your opinion is a credit to the club. Who knows--the next MoM might just be YOU!

DEAR LIBRARIAN

Dear Librarian - Why don't I have a MAB offer? I'm a long-term member and a good swapper. I've chosen my favorite genres in my Account Settings, but still no MAB on my homepage. Why don't I qualify? Am I not appreciated?!? --  FOMO in Fayetteville

Dear Faye,

Yes, of course you are appreciated! You're not doing anything wrong. MABs are randomly assigned -- you're not doing anything wrong if you don't currently have a MAB offer. Just make sure you have chosen your favorite genres in your Account Settings (doing that turns on the MAB function for your account), and check back later -- if you have a MAB offer, you will see MAB surrounded by an oval at the top right of your Homepage. If not, be sure to check again later. Fingers crossed!

Dear Librarian -  I got a Gift Certificate for Standard Membership for Christmas. How do I redeem it? -- New to Swapping

Dear Newbie,

Welcome to the club! What a wonderful gift you received -- a  year of unlimited fee-free swapping (using Book Credits only to request books). It's a good winter project: start sending out the books you've read that are piling up in your house, making space for books you want to read to come to you in the mail! To redeem the Gift Certificate, just go to the Gift Certificate page under Kiosk at the top right of any page on the site (in the grey bar) and type the redemption code into the space. Then click Next and apply the Gift Certificate to your account. If you don't have an account yet, you can register one first, and then apply the Gift Certificate to it. Happy swapping!

Dear Librarian - I got a Standard Membership Gift Certifcate too! I'm a long-time member and I'm already enrolled in Limited Membership that expires in a couple of months. What will happen when I apply the Standard Membership Gift Certificate to my account? -- Upgrading in Utah

Dear Ray,

When you apply the Standard Membership Gift Certificate to your account (or if you enroll in Standard Membership), a year of Standard Membership will be applied to follow your current membership. That means that:

  • if you are an A la Carte member (not currently enrolled in annual membership) when you apply the Gift Certificate (or purchase a year of Standard Membership), your Standard Membership will begin right away
  • if you are a Standard Member when you apply the Gift Certificate (or purchase another year of Standard Membership), your expiration date will be extended by a year
  • if you are a Limited Member when you apply the Gift Certificate for Standard Membership (or purchase a year of Standard Membership), the Standard Membership will begin when your Limited Membership expires. Note: if your Limited Membership will expire within 45 days, then when you apply the Standard Membership Gift Certificate (or purchase a year of Standard Membership) your membership will be upgraded immediately, and you'll have those remaining days PLUS a year of Standard Membership!

If you're a Limited Member and your expiration date is more than 45 days away, you should consider the $8 immediate upgrade to Standard Membership. That will upgrade you right away. It won't affect any future memberships you may have queued up in your account; it will simply upgrade the remainder of your current membership from Limited to Standard, for the duration of your Limited Membership. Then the upgrade will expire on the expiration date of the Limited Membership. (And if you have a Standard Membership scheduled to begin then, it will begin automatically.)
