Just a sugestion you may want to look into...
If you have a DVD Rental store nearby you might take the Discs that 'skip' to them and ask if they could run those in their DVD Cleaner/Buffer/Scratch remover machine (usually sits on the counter or rear shelf). They get DVD's all the time that 'skip' or 'have 'drop-outs) and is usually caused by a minor imperfection on the surface that can't be seen visually but that affects the laser beam opticaly when the disc is at play - always worth a shot and most DVD Rentals places would do it for free. 
If it 'fixes' things then great and if not then at least you gave it a shot. 

For whatever it's worth - I have DVDs' that wont play on my older DVD player in the familty room but plays flawlessly on the portable DVD player as well as on the little TV with a built-in DVD player in the guest room. Go figure!

Danny,  Since Hollywood Video and Blockbuster closed I have not found any rental stores.  I will try to find another rental place.
