I read Colors of the Mountain by Da Chen.  It is his story of growing up during China's Cultural Revolution in a poor farming community.  He was born into a family that were formerly landlords, which did not make them popular persons in the community at that time.  It was interesting to see how he ultimately persevered through strong family support and the support of a woman in the community who tutored him in English and encouraged his studies.  He was eventually accepted into a college in Beijing as an English major.  It was interesting to compare his experiences to my own life since we are approximately the same age.
