Interesting. Different. Not really sci fi, but kind of?? Written in 2011 and set in 2030. The cure for cancer has been found and so people are living longer than ever. Lots of youth drugs have also been discovered which are keeping the older people healthy. And there is universal health care. So they are living longer and sucking up lots of government benefits. Which means the country is bankrupt. And then tragedy strikes and a massive earthquake happens in LA knocking the entire city to the ground. China is invited in as an equal partner to rebuild the city. The younger generation is rebelling against the old. Technology and robots are taking over. And then a Chinese man is elected President . . . of America. Book ends with his inauguration speech about no borders, we are all one earth . . . so ⦠positive? or eerie?

This book is about what happens to America in 2030. With people living longer, cancer cured, and money and resources being sucked dry by the elderly, young folks are feeling the pressure and an anger stirs toward the elders. Brooks has great insight into our society and the future. Interesting thoughts regarding the years to come.

Well written, and a lot of thought went into making the future realistic. (He actually got Kim Jun Il's death year correct, although I don't know if that's a miracle of any type. I got too depressed reading it, so I didn't finish it. Too many people tended to be thinking the same way (kind of like Coupland's "Generation X), but it was well put together.

Interesting story, but the start of the terrorism happens at a "casino near Palm Desert". He doesn't want to say "Rancho Mirage"?
