I got an automated message saying that one of the books on my wishlist was available.  So I completed my end by saying yes, I want the book.  Then this afternoon, I got a personal message from the sender, advising me the book was an ARC (new and unread) and asked if I still wanted it.  I replied "no", because as I understand it, you are not supposed to be able to list ARC's and then I would be unable to trade it.

Is my understanding of how the rules work about ARC's and that this person shouldn't have listed it for trade?

Thanks for any info-

Susan

You are correct that ARC's are not to be traded through regular swapping, though there is a location in the Book Bazaar where ARC's may be posted.  Hopefully you didn't cancel the exchange on your end, which would remove you from the FIFO line for that particular title.  The potential Sender should have canceled the transaction and then consider posting it in the appropriate place.

You are correct. At least the poster PM'd you, but they shouldn't have posted it. Perhaps had it not been a WL book they would not have.

Correct.  You can ask for a credit for an ARC but are supposed to do that in the Book Bazaar or in one of the genre forums "is this on your WL thread".  You should not post ARCs to your shelf and try and send them out via FIFO.

I hope you made the sender cancel so you don't lose your place in the WL line.

I have not cancelled the transaction yet, and I don't see where the sender has yet either.  I will wait until morning (I am on the west coast and I am not sure where the sender is) to see if they have cancelled their acceptance.

Thanks for your help!

ARC's are not to be posted FIFO.  There are other options for trading them in the Book Bazaar, or other discussion forums.

Susan, did the poster do the right thing and cancel the transaction?  If not you may wish to contact PBS admin...the posting pages and pop up windows clearly state ARC's may not be posted FIFO, and you shouldn't have to be wasting your time on this.

She had not cancelled her acceptance of the book yet, so I just sent a message to her asking if she would.  If she doesn't within the next 24 hours, I will contact the admin.

Thanks for the tip.

Susan, I would contact the PBS Team anyway. Though the sender is giving you the courtesy of knowing it's an ARC and asking if you want it anyway, the rules are very very clear that ARCs cannot be posted FIFO. When we post a book, we're asked if it follows the "Golden Rules", and one of the points is that it's not an ARC.

At least she contacted you beforehand...and hopefully will be willing to cancel the request herself. I had a book on my WL that was not due to be released for more than 2 months down the line, and like all my WL books, it's on auto-request. Well, the person posted it, printed the wrapper and marked it mailed all within about 3 minutes, and I noticed it the next morning and sent a PM asking about it....usually when that's happened it's been an ARC. It was a new member who hadn't read the rules and didn't realize ARCs weren't allowed. We had to contact PBS to cancel the order because he'd already marked it as mailed so he couldn't even cancel it.
