I have no problem receiving ex-library books. I don't have a problem with folks who don't want to receive them.  Just to be clear.   ;-)

Recently I received an ex-library book where someone had tried to remove all the stickers and clear sticker covers.  The book was a soft cover (trade paperback) and the removal process took off some of the cover image.  The cover is mostly black and shades of grey, so the white paper underneath shows up well.  The cover is not cut or damaged, but it does have these "splotches" of white paper where the cover finish was torn off. Does this make it unpostable?  I haven't checked to see if it's WL, but it was a really good read. ;-)

hmmm, to me that is a grey area.  part of me says yes, they should have just left the library stickers on the cover.  but part of me says no if the areas are less than 1" since you can have a tear that size.

how bad does the cover look?

White patch a little less than the size of a quarter on both the front and back covers.

Hmm.  I'd say if they are that small it sounds okay to me.

You could always post and then PM the requestor the condition after accepting, too.  Just to make sure they are okay with it.

From the Help center:

  • Must both be present (front and back)
    • note that a paperback missing its front cover is  usually an illegal, unsold copy
    • "cover" does not = dust jacket.  Hardcovers do not need to include their dust jackets to be swapped here.
  • Cover not water damaged (there may be no water damage to any part of the book)
  • Cover not torn or chewed/gnawed
    • some used book stores cut out a small part of the cover; if the amount missing is less than 1 inch, this is OKAY
    • a small rip (less than 1 inch) in the cover is OKAY
    • yes, that does say "chewed/gnawed" above.  That means no pet-chewed (or human-chewed) books.
  • A bookplate inside the cover or on the flyleaf is OKAY

Nothing you have described appears to make the book unpostable.  The HC also states that if a book is in the gray area you can post it and then PM the requestor to make the book condition clear.

Thus, I would post it and PM the requestor.
