The method of approach herein...is not historical, though a skeleton of contemporary events is given for the sake of a general outline; nor is it chronological, if by that is meant a comprehensive sweep of world movements in point of their occurrence in various countries. Specifically, this survey of the Biblical backgrounds is confined to the principal lands of the Bible as they appear in the progressive realization of the redemptive movement, beginning with Abraham and Israel in the ancient world, and culminating with Jesus and the Apostles in the Roman Empire.
