[this is the 3rd time trying to post this--hope it word this time! :-) ]

When you edit book data--such as providing cover images--how long does it take to to be approved, so that it appears on the book page and in your Bookshelf?

The reason I ask is that I submitted a cover image and a description for _Gilbert: A Comedy of Manners_ (ISBN 0140069623), by Judith Martin, on Jan. 15. It's been over a week. I'm starting to wonder if I did something wrong. I did the submission slowly and carefully, so I doubt that's the hang-up. I did get the reply message of "Your submission has been been accepted..."--so I doubt that I flubbed it.

The Help doc says:

Your submissions will need to be reviewed and approved by our Data Correction approval volunteers; this may take a few days.  The volunteers do these approvals as they can, and sometimes verifying ONE data correction is a labor-intensive process.

I realize the submissions are handled by human beings, not a machine . But still...

I have one more related question: when I *do* finally get the cover image and description up on the details page, is there any way I can make it appear in the new postings list for that or the next week? I'm asking because I'm sure it was pretty much ignored the first time 'round. I was thinking of putting it on hold, then releasing it from hold. Would that make it a "new posting"?

Thanks for all your help!

Fiona~

I believe that it does take awhile for this to get accomplished. So over a week is not unusual.

When you do get the cover image change, if it doesn't show up on the book you have posted automatically, delete the book from your bookshelf, then post it again.  Should take care of it.

As stated above, it can take a while.  A week isn't unusual.  I did some 3 days ago and they're still not up, but keep checking.  Pat

Hi Fiona,

I've spent the past month uploading images for my shelf.....probably 250+  If I understand correctly, there are several sets of volunteers, some do images, others do data etc.

The images volunteers have been FANTASTIC.....usually was done within several days (and more often than not, within 24 hours or less!!)....but ...I was only submitting an image.  It really depends on how many are being submitted in any given day and when the volunteers are able to process the submissions.

Several times when it seemed a bit long, I resubmitted the image.  One of two things will happen.  You will get a message stating the image is already submitted, now you know they haven't gotten to it yet, or it is accepted, and you know that "cyberspace" got it!!  lol

You might want to resubmit just the image so you'll know.

check the image that you used and make sure it was a jpeg and not a gif.  you can only use jpeg images for the covers.  I've found some but they were gifs so I couldn't use them.

They are usually pretty good about getting images approved especially if they don't need to cropped or altered in any way

They are usually pretty quick about it, I think I have submitted some since then that have been approved. Did you submit the book cover through the Edit Book Data on the book or the Upload Book Covers link at the bottom of any PBS page? I think it doesn't submit correctly if you do it though Edit Book Data. You may want to resubmit it using the Upload Book Covers and see. If they get it and it doesn't get accepted, you should get a PM explaining why.

If you are submitting a data edit, as well as uploading an image, go ahead and use the data edit page.  (The old one didn't work, but the new one does.)  If you are only uploading a picture, the easiest way is to click on the blue "no cover image available" icon on the book's info page.  If that doesn't work, or if you have more than one image to upload, the blue "upload book covers" link at the bottom of any page works fine, too.  (Don't use the data edit page for an image only, because it splits your submission, sending the image to the image team, and a data edit with no changes to the data team which someone on that team has to figure out.)

We've cleared out the image queue a few times since 1/15, so if your had gone through, it would be showing by now.  Leslie's suggestion of checking to see if it is JPEG (rather than GIF or bitmap) is a great one.  If it is JPEG, it might be corrupted.  Open it up and save it again as JPEG.  That will usually clear the corrupted part.

And while you are at it, you can check to be sure it meets these criteria:

  1. Have the extra space around the image (usually white on the sides) cropped off.
  2. Be straight
  3. Be clear
  4. Be large enough to read the title
  5. Be free from any emblems from other sites, such as eBay or Amazon.

Usually, if an image is rejected for one of these reasons, you'll get a PM, but sometimes we forget.

Oh, and just an interesting factoid:  once a data edit or image change has been approved, you'll see the change first on the data edit page, then various parts of it will show up at different times as the server updates things.
