Synopsis

A vivid portrait of an American family in the middle decades of the twentieth century by bestselling author Alice McDermott.

MY COMMENTS: This is not one of Alice McDermott's best. It's a little flat and disjointed. Read by Martha Plimpton, I found it satisfying enough to listen to and stay with for my 10 hour drive, so definitely not disappointing in that regard. It is soft and endearing with an ending that leaves the listener wondering what happened.

A lot like "Flesh and Blood"; a story that follows one family from the parents' meeting to the coming of age of the youngest child. This was hard for me to put down. The ending leaves you wondering what will happen to this family.

A sad look into the lives of an ordinary middle class family in Long Island in the 50s and 60s. Their troubles were our troubles, their view of the world, ours.

It was a bit slow in spots but overall a nice story about an American Family in the 60's.

I like her books. Much of it is written from the children's point of view of adult life. Good read.
