A very well written story about friendship, race relations in the South and choices people were forced to make in that social climate. Recommend it!

There are some very accurate reviews on amazon too. This is the first fiction novel written by the author. She has written other NON fiction works.

It seems to be based on some experiences her father, a doctor, experienced, as written in her end notes. I think she tried so hard to be mystical and symbolic that she wrote in a choppy obscure way that was confusing, not poetic She often used big SAT words, which again made me think she was trying to hard to write the next great Oprah novel. I felt bogged down, and kinda trudged through the book. I felt the revelations near the end, really redeemed the book, but was annoyed that everything just turned out peachy for everyone. Overall you might not want to put this book at the top of your reading pile.

Enjoyable book and was surprised by the ending. Love it when that happens!
