Tremendous book consisting of memoirs of a Marine who spend 3 years as a POW of the Japanese. Incredibly moving with both pathos and gallows humor. One of the best books I've ever read about POWs!

Charles Jackson takes us on a first person trip of how it was on the Philippines when the Marines first faced the Japs during WWII, and then follows the Marines after their surrender to their prisoner of war camps and even to the copper mines on the home islands of Japan. He uses examples of men that were there. If this era interests you as it does me you will find this book as enjoyable as I did. The description of the horrors of the prisoner of war camps is graphic, but you will also find humor such as when he describes the gambling and one story of when a really big Marine tries to find cover in a narrow trench during an air raid.

This is an excellent memoir of the horrors of surviving a Japanese WWII POW camp, including the Bataan Death March. The author writes a very readable narrative with numerous character studies of captives and captors and proves himself to be a man of great courage, observation and compassion. Nice clean copy, would be a great gift for the service man or woman in your family, or an honored veteran.
