to receive a book from certain places - VI, PR, HI, AK, APOs, etc.

I really have to give kudos to the USPS on a CD I received today. It was a WL item offered on July 11, 2016 from Ketchikan, AK - I received it today  - July 16, 2016 - in Topeka, KS.  5 DAYS!!!!!! The planes must have been sitting on the runways waiting for my package!!! LOL.  Pat

Not too long ago, I sent a media mail package from California to Florida. I sent it on a Monday, and it was delivered on Wednesday! Madness! :O

Last year, I received a thick, heavy book sent by media mail from Puerto Rico in 3 days.

It just depends on if it gets on a plane or gets on a truck.

I send a lot of stuff PR..ranging in cards, media mail, packages...I also get a lot. The slowest time is Christmas mail. The longest media mail I personally had was 10 days.

I did once have a card that for some inexplicable reason take over a month to arrive...just one of those things.

My only issue with CA is if books go to the Bell Gardens P.O. Books can get stuck there for awhile. My theory i sthat the post office folks read the books first, then send them on! LOL

I've had incredibly quick shipping lately, books flying across country in 1 day or 2 and that's with media mail. Amazing.

In my experience, books traveling within the contiguous US can take anywhere from 2 days to 10 days, not related to distance in any way. It just seems that some books make the right connections and some don't. A PBS friend of mine and I ran a little experiment: we both mailed books to each other on the same day -- Texas/Michigan -- I got her book in two days, the one I sent her took six...go figure! But overall, I agree that Media Mail is much faster than it was when I joined 9 years ago.
