Author: Walter Mosley
New York Times bestselling author Walter Mosley introduces an "astonishing character" (Los Angeles Times Book Review) in this acclaimed collection of entwined tales. Now, he has come home to a new kind of prison: two battered rooms in an abandoned building in Watts. Working for the Bounty supermarket, and moving perilously close to invisibility, it is Socrates who throws a lifeline to a drowning man: young Darryl, whose shaky path is already bloodstained and fearsome. In a place of violence and hopelessness, Socrates offers up his own battle-scarred wisdom that can turn the world around.

This is a set of morality tales set within one man's experience in Los Angeles. There are many tales of redemption here that I found satisfying.

Not your usual crime stories. An interesting, offbeat central character in a gritty, urban setting, but suffused with compassion and intelligence.

Wow! This was so good I cannot wait to read more about this character. There are books I read which I refer to as brain candy, they contain violence, mystery, romance. I like brain candy but this book is a balanced four course meal. Walter Mosley knows all the tricks but in this case he just created a character so intriguing engaging and original that no tricks were necessary.

I grew up in the city and have always known black folks but this book has given me a depth of understanding I never had before. I will read it at least once more before I post it.
