I read the first 64 pages on the bus after picking this up from the 'free' book truck at the VA Hospital lobby for my amigo Armando, who wishes to pass the time reading Westerns.
I liked one of Horgan's books that I gave him last week. I read the first three or four pages: It began with the protagonist sitting in a saloon in Wickenburg, sharing a bottle of rotgut whisky with two floozies. A miner comes in and braces him.....
Mr. Huebner's novel begins with the scouts that come upon the battlefield of Little Big Horn two days after the 7th Cavalry met their end. As it is portrayed here, the bodies were all ravaged. There are realistic descriptions of the flies and carrion eaters, plus details of the thoughts, fears, and psychoses of the scouts as they follow the Indians. Slow moving and very wordy descriptions.
