A novel about the ups and downs of an American female English teacher in Japan. Not only because she likes the Japanese and speaks the language, she's there because she has a chronic medical condition that she could not afford to get treatment for in the US. She helps an American father who is asking a lot of questions about the sudden death of his son in the Land of the Rising Sun. I didn't know the author when she was teaching in Japan, but I was there teaching at the same time she was, the early 1990s. I can vouch that she perfectly captures the American teacher expat experience in Japan at that time. Yes, the book is tad long, but well worth reading for anybody who was there or is thinking of teaching there.

The intersecting stories of two Americans in Japan: one an expat academic forced to make a living selling tricked-out funerals, the other a grieving parent on a mission to discover how his son died. A little bit of mystery, a little bit of comedy, the potential for an odd romance, and a wonderfully wry view of everyday life in Japan.
