This book is a collection of essays by different authors organized around several large topics.
Specifically: "Sixteen selections outline the foundations of American politics. The topics include primary documents and the rationale behind the United State Constitution, some contemporary ideas and values, and some recent constitutional issues. Fifteen articles examine the structure and present status of the American presidency, Congress, judiciary and bureaucracy. Eighteen selections review how parties, voters, interest groups, elections, and mass media work in the process of American politics. The selection of President Reagan in 1984 is the focus of the last subsection. Eight selections examine the effects on American politics of domestic and economic policy as well as foreign and defense policy."
