This is the second book in the series about the War Between the States and the people who experience it. Ann McMillan does a fine job again of keeping the reader in suspense until the final.

Narcissa Powers, a young white widow, and Judah Daniel, a free black herbalist, work side by side as nurses in Richmond's Civil War hospitals. Soon, however, they are calledaway to a plantation whose owner has returned from the War and found his entire family slaughtered except for his baby son, saved by the nanny. Sitting beside the bodies are the personal servants, all with blood on themselves and bloody knives nearby. All the women servants are in states of hallucination or cataleptic, even the nanny. Narissa Powers and Judah Daniel have to find the real killer before there is retribution on innocent slaves through fear of a slave uprising. Set agains a fascinating historical background and graced with richly developed characters, Angel Trumpet provides an intricately plotted mystery story, full of interesting insights into the divided loyalties and conflicting belief systems of the day.
