I'm sorry if this topic is posted some place else, but I just have to share.

I have been running a 2 for 1 deal and in one response had a total of 6 books to send.  So, I look through my stash of boxes, and find one the perfect size.  I pack my books so nicely, with my PBS wrapper taped on top.  Since I was adding so much more weight, I opted to pay for postage at the post office.

I ran to an "annex" to do so over my lunch hour today. ....now keep in mind this is a little place that isn't really an official post office.  It's near the local college - but they sell stamps etc. etc. (my husband calls it "The Fake Post Office")

I patiently wait in line (because there is ALWAYS a line) and come to find out that because the box I'm using says Priority Mail, they are going to have to charge me the Priority Mail cost (for this box it would have been almost $14).  No thank you!  So I notice that they have other packing material for sale....but all they have are OTHER Priority Mail boxes.

I never knew this about Priority Mail boxes etc.  I figured that if I just crossed that out, I'd be good to go. Nope.

Soooooo, I didn't pay $14...instead I drove across town to a REAL post office where they do sell regular plain ol' boxes.  After standing in line AGAIN I got my box mailed.

I just wish I had known that my "perfect box" would have caused so many problems I would have used something else.

Thanks for listening! ~ Cassandra

Sorry you had a problem, but priority boxes and envelopes can't be used for anything except priority mailng.

at least you could repackage the books and not pay priority, that would have been crazy!

I wish that once they were used you could use them free of charge (not pay priority) but I can see where you would have to because it says it on the box.  I was going to ship some things and the only box I had that was about the right size was a priority box, so I found something else.

My apologies.  Bad advice is best erased in case before it becomes viral.

No, you may NOT just cover it in paper and mail it.  You can't even shred it and use it for packing.  If it's mailed once or a hundred times it must ALWAYS go as priority!

Media mail can and will sometimes be opened for inspection.  If you have covered a priority box with paper the package will be postage due on the other end.

Here's my mini rant about priority boxes.  The local PO that has an APC machine and doesn't officially open until 10AM doesn't have any of the priority supplies available in the lobby.  It's aggravating when you just want to mail something that way.

You can order any of the priority boxes and envelopes through the PO site and just have them on hand for when you need them.   I ordered a dozen each of the flat rate boxes before Christmas and had them even when my PO ran out.   I even used some to wrap Christmas gifts in since they are such a nice size.   My family was nice enough to give me the boxes back after opening the gifts!  lol       I like having the boxes here for when I need them.

I just can't see why Post Office employees all over are so rude..they seem to have no personality!!

Do they realize that with everyone using the computer to email instead of writing and mailing letters and also paying bills online..they should be happy that Paperback swap members are standing in line to mail their packages..heck we are paying their salaries!!!!

Anyway, just thought I'd share my thoughts!!!

Thanks everyone for listening and being supportive.  Now that  I now the Prority rule I won't make the mistake again.  I think the most annoying part was that the place where I first went didn't have any other supplies....I don't think I'll be going back there either!
