Yet another question to add to the many about self-publishing. I've considered it before, but I've always wondered, how can you tell whether or not your work is polished enough to start selling on places like lulu.com ?

I know some SP companies do that for you. I can't remember which ones though, but I did read it in their info emails.

Sarah- that is the main problem with SP, most do not take the time to get editing done. There are some companies out their that will edit and proof read your work.  You should try and find a writers group in your area or critique web site and let others have at it..LOL  Dont rely on friends.

And the main issue with SP is, they will always tell you your work is ready to be published, its how they make money.  It would be like asking a coffee shop if there products were good, they are going to say yes so you buy it.

You need to ask yourself, can I make what I am writing any tigher or better in any way? If you say yes, then its not ready.
