All I remember is that it has a picture of a girl with a red salamander on her neck or shoulder.

I just remember more about the book it starts out with the girl arriving at college i think and her roomate is attacked by some sort of demon or other and this salamander helps, it can talk.

I've read that!  Unfortunately, I can't remember the title.   One of the girl might be named Jamie, or something that starts with a J.  She's a witch, and roomed with someone, name begining with K?, who paints pictures of her emotions.  The other girl is attacked by an emotion-sucking vampire, and Jamie and her familiar, the salamander, has to help.  My library classified it as fantasy, young adult.
