I finished it last night.  I've already read Darjeeling and loved it.  This was an excellent book though not quite as well conceived.  Maybe because it was her first novel.

It's the story of Meenu and Vishnu, childhood friends, living in a small village in India.  On their 7th birthday as their tradition goes, they are married (they won't become husband and wife until later in life).  After the festivities, Meenu is kidnapped by bandits.  Miles from home with no one to help find her village, she becomes an orphan.  She's giving to an America couple and within months finds herself in California and with no connections to the past.

The book is really about the two in adulthood and everything they face.  It's a fascinating read especially if you like books set in unusual places and with cultural conflict.
