how did that work out? is the cd usually there or is it sometimes missing.

According to the rules if a book comes with media, the media can;t be missing.

it's a funny thing about rules.

I have sent out brand new books which included CDs.

interesting 'cause this is even an issue when ordering used textbooks from Amazon or their subcontractors or other online textbook sellers.  The new version will come with the CD but many times the used sellers don't include them even though instructors require them for classes.  So 'getting' a great deal on a used book can backfire cause it shows up without the CD.  And the same companies won't 'buy back' a used book without the CD even if they sold it to you that way!!!!

so it wouldn't surprise me if members here get burned in the same situation.

You can mark it as a problem and ask for your credit.  The CD is required.

CDs are media. The rule is set up that media is required, but items that are not media, such as Klutz books, do not need the extras. Part of this is that PBS was set up to use media mail. Non media materials would require first class. Confusing the labels.

Lots of children's books originally included a toy or a piece of jewelry, etc., that cannot be mailed Media Mail.  These do NOT have to be included and, if they are, need to be sent first class - NOT media mail. 

PBS has given us this statement to add to the description field of listings that originally had a non-media item included:

Please Note: as with every used book being swapped at PaperBackSwap, the non-Media item that originally came with the book (in this case, the xxx) may not be included. Requestors should not expect the xxx to be included with a used copy of this book.

The xxx being the name of the actual item, e.g. locket, crayons, etc.. Of course, there are MANY listings that qualify for this disclaimer, but have not yet been edited.
 

Yes, I have requested books that came with CDs and they were included.

One more thing to remember....

If you are posting a book that has a CD included, you will still only receive 1 credit.  I recently had someone ask me why their children's book they posted (that included a CD) didn't come up with a total of 3 credits. As you know audiobooks are 2 credits and books are 1 credit. If there is a CD attached to the book you posted, you'll still only get 1 credit.  Asking for more than 1 credit for a book is not allowed.
