Can anyone explain how I could be #8 on one of my WL yesterday and today I am #9?

A guess - a deal went bad.  That person was put back in line.

It could be that someone requested the book and it was Received With A Problem, so they went back to #1 on the wishlish which moved you down a number.

another possibility is that someone had their account on hold when you joined the line, and he/she returned from their vacation hold
