Two of the books I requested within the last several weeks were marked lost in the mail by PBS after not arriving within 26 days. Neither one was sent using DC. The one I'm not too concerned about, there are other copies in the system that I could order and I'm in no hurry to read it. The other I went back to the top of the list and have already had another copy sent out. But it seems odd to me that TWO books would be lost in the mail in such a short period of time. I know we're getting close to the holiday season where mail is totally chaotic, but we're not quite to that crunch yet. Is anyone else having this sort of problem, or getting their books much slower than normal? Or am I just being completely plagued with rotten luck lately, and not just in the PBS arena?

No problems here. I've sent a bunch in the past two weeks and they're all getting to where they need to be, and have several books a week coming in. The last lost book I had on the way to me was over a year ago (I just checked my transaction archive) and the next to last one was a year before that.

That said, things often seem to run in streaks here!

i had my 1st book go lost the begining of the week (DC didn't help it).  let's hope it finds its way eventually.  Many others have come in fine this month.

UPDATE-well back to 0 lost books. the sender forgot to mail it.  Once she put it in the mail it came quickly :)

I'm pretty new to PBS and have only ordered 11 books so far (which I know isn't much of a sample size), but I've already had 1 book go lost, and I've got another two books (being shipped together) that are in danger of being lost.

The first one was sent without DC.  The more recent order was sent with DC.  I always use DC when sending out books myself, and might start requesting that all of those sending me books use it as well.  I figure at least if it has DC I know it was mailed.

@Rich, I had a book come to me with DC where the postage was printed one day, but the book wasn't mailed (the postmark on the postage, at least) until 2 weeks later! There's still a danger (at least with using electronic DC) with people forgetting to mail their books. That said, I am seriously considering using DC as well. At least I'll get credit, even if it's lost in the mail.

I have had 1 book go lost that was sent from Hawaii. No sign of it, and no DC info available on the USPS website. On the other hand, I had 2 books returned to the sender, she resent them, and I got them before they went lost!

Back in August, I had 4 books that I mailed out in a two week period get lost.  Two eventually came back to me.  The other two, who knows.  Still out of almost 70 requests, I figure that's pretty good.

I've got two orders coming to me on the verge of being "lost." I've also had long delays in all mail going from me in FL to TX, although everywhere else is okay so far. I have some books coming to me from the Virgin Islands w/dc, although those only say the po should expect them for mailing - 3 weeks ago.

I've been waiting for some books (it was a 4-1 deal) coming from NY and they will be considered lost by Nov. 8.  I've been pretty lucky so far, this is the first time I've had this happen.  They didn't use DC so no way of checking.  There were a couple of the books I was really looking forward to reading but not sure I want to re-order since is was a pretty good deal.

Which brings up another question - the one book that was actually ordered isn't one I really want to spend a credit on at this time - if it gets marked as lost in the mail - does it automatically go to the next person who might have this book?  And if so, can I stop it before it moves forward since I don't want to re-order?

Thanks!

Tina

Out of almost 60 books I sent it is the first time that a book will be lost. (from NH to SC)

I don't use DC, but if it happens more frequent I will start using it.

What bothers me is that it was a wishlisted book I sent, and that I need the credits and that the person whom it sent it to never answered my e-mail if she received it or not. I am not even certain if she is still an active member.

It makes me feel better that I am not the only one.

Happy swapping.

I've mailed more than 400 books since the beginning of the year and none have ever gone lost.

Coming to me (more than 350 books) ... I've had a few ripped open packages where the books fell out and I got an empty wrapper (so I know how those got lost) ... plus one that actually never arrived (but I suspect that it was never mailed for other reasons)

Some people seem to have issues with lost books but it hasn't been a problem for me so far.

I don't generally use DC except on multi-book orders. It does add up if you mail as much as I do.

I do try to support PBS by donating credits back, though ... since I don't use DC.

"Lost" books are going to more of an issue the closer we get to the Holiday season.  Not that this is why your books have gone missing.  During my membership I've had several go "lost", but most were due to being from an APO, Hawaii, or Alaska.  Takes a lot of extra time usually.  But they did show up.  the 2 I most remember going lost and staying lost were during a hurricane that hit TX and the 2 books were from different places in TX.  Sometimes the sender doesn't realize (for whatever reason) they haven't been mailed yet.  Sometimes like me we have to depend on others to mail our books out and they aren't as reliable as we'd like.  I hope they show up for you soon!

I've had four books lost on their way to me since I joined in July.  Two of them had DC, so I saw them disappear in route to me--Warrendale, PA is a black hole for media mail.  The other two did not have DC, so I can't be sure they were ever mailed.  Only one book that I've sent has been lost, but since I use DC, I still got credit for it.

I have sent over 130 books, so far none have gone lost and I have received 49 books - so far all have arrived safely.  I have 6 more on the way!  I have used and not used DC.

I've ordered 43 books so far, and 3 of them have been lost in the mail. All three were sent without DC. All three were sent by different members, and only one of those members actually communicated with me about the lost book. One of the lost books was sent to a former address, while two of the more recently lost books were sent to my current address (in a different city than my old).

I've sent out 38 books and none of them have ever been lost in the mail. I alternate using DC depending on the type of book I'm sending out.

I feel like my "lost book rate" is a little high and that really disappoints me. I have an excellent record with the books I send out, though.

I've had a few books arrive very late to me in the past few months.  Most of them were sent on time (I could tell by DC or the date on the postage), and some with DC were marked as delivered more than a month before the package made its way to my doorstep.

I have yet to have a book I sent go lost, and I've been using the site for 3 years.  I always mail from a post office.

I just had a package with two books in it that I mailed go lost.  It was only going to the next state over too.  Last time I send anything without DC...

Edit: They finally arrived 3 days after the system declared them lost.  Yay!

I've sent out almost 1600 books and only 6 have gone lost, and not been found.  I've had a couple go lost but they eventually got to their destination.  Pat

Sometimes it's hard to tell what's going on. My mail person picked up 2 packages from me last week. One shows that it went to the mail distribution center in Opa Lacka (they've always gone to Jacksonville in the past), the other doesn't show that they've received it yet - anywhere. I'm hoping for the best.

Yep, I had ordered two from the same person and waited and waited for them.  Finally got a message that they were lost.  I checked on the person's profile and it said closed or suspended.   Oh well if I can't get them here, I suppose I could order them online. :D  I was just wondering how does one get their profile suspended?  Or even closed?

Kayleen, it's possible that the person marked a bunch of books mailed but never mailed them so PBS suspended their account. An occasional lost book is no big deal, but if you supposedly mailed a dozen books and none showed up at their new homes, odds are they were never sent.

A great majority of the books that have gone lost on the way to me over the years were (supposedly) sent by people who subsequently had their account closed.

I mailed a book 9 days ago to San Antonio, Texas from Orlando, FL with DC (Paypal label) and I still get the "The U.S. Postal Service was electronically notified by the shipper on October 28, 2009 to expect your package for mailing." etc. message.  I'm getting concerned that it's hit the USPS black hole. I hope not as my book was the only copy available and I know my swapper is really looking forward to it.

I've had really slow delivery times from FL to TX - but don't worry Phil, my last one said that up until the time it was delivered!
